Abstract
The design and set up of residential areas in the United Kingdom, Austria, the Scandinavian countries and The Netherlands are presented. Most well-known examples are new towns like Stevenage, Cumbernauld, Albertslund, Milton Keynes, Orebro, and Emmen. All these areas were designed to restrain car traffic, to improve the safety of the residents, to assure easy access to the public transport, to centralize the car parks, to provide a lot of green landscaping, and to protect the environment.
