Abstract

On May 16, 2007, Insurance Bureau of Canada, on behalf of the Highway Safety Roundtable and with the support of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, sponsored a symposium in Toronto called “Working Together to Understand Driver Fatigue.” The symposium brought together about one hundred stakeholders including driver educators, fatigue experts, medical doctors, academics, police and political leaders. This report of the symposium proceedings includes an overview of the presentations made by four authoritative Ontario researchers, the Deputy Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ontario’s Minister of Transportation. Notes and references from the presentations of doctors Tasca, Elzohairy, Moller and Smiley, along with a comprehensive bibliography of driver fatigue research, are included as appendices to this report.
