This paper describes research carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology over the last fifteen years, which has examined the competitive pressures facing the international automobile industry. Various issues are addressed concerned with the need to identify best practice within the industry. In addition, methodologies are described for measuring differences in performance. The results of monitoring work to highlight performance differences in various parts of the world are discussed, particularly as these relate to factory operations, product development and components supply.
