Abstract

Statistics are provided of the following data from 1987-1991: a) road network lengths, broken down by type of road (motorway, main road, secondary road, and other roads); b) numbers of motor vehicles manufactured, imported, and exported; c) numbers of motor vehicles in use; d) road traffic, broken down by vehicle type; e) fuel consumption, broken down by fuel type; f) road accidents, broken down by injury severity, time of day, and location; g) rates and basis of assessments of road user taxes; h) average annual taxation; i) annual receipts from road user taxation; and j) road expenditure. Regional, local and central government expenditure is listed separately, and includes figures for maintenance, new construction, and a lump figure covering all other expenditure such as administration and research. Most European, African, American and Central American, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries are covered. However the data from each country is not necessarily complete.
