Abstract

A number of methods to reduce wrong-way driving on California freeways are discussed in this paper. The results of the prevention methods are presented after which some recommendations are made to combat wrong-way driving as much as possible. The author suggests for (1) periodic inspection of all on- and off-terminals under both night and day conditions, (2) effective maintenance of traffic control devices, including pavement markings, (3) camera surveillance at suspected problem locations, and (4) improvement of interchange design in order to achieve plenty of sight distance on the mainline.
