Abstract

The technical committee members studied the following aspects of road tunnels: selection criteria for the underground solution (three levels of evaluation of the selection criteria, use of selection criteria to derive a solution, common factors in tunnel solutions, rural tunnel considerations, urban tunnel considerations, tunnels under major navigable waterways); pollution - ventilation (determination of fresh air requirements, ventilation); lighting (adaptation luminance and lighting in the entrance zone, lighting of short tunnels); traffic and geometry (comparison between theoretical capacity and observed flow in road tunnels, speed flow relation, transverse position measurements, accidents and incidents in tunnels, lateral clearances); safety (safety equipment, fire in tunnels); operating costs and methods (operating costs, execution of maintenance works in relation to traffic safety problems). For the covering abstract of the whole congress see IRRD 278407.
