Abstract

Data are presented showing that the year-to-year variation in the number of accidents is such that the standard deviation is approximately equal to the square root of the mean for types of accident occurring less than 100 times per year, but is considerably greater for more common types of accident, becoming proportional to the mean. A theoretical explanation is proposed.
