Abstract

Years Ahead road safety for seniors is a popular RACV program which has been available to older road users throughout Victoria for almost ten years. Program participants receive practical information and advice to help keep them safe as drivers and pedestrians. The overall objective of Years Ahead is to promote safe road user behaviours, encourage older drivers to assess their own driving performance regularly and to plan for their future mobility. The Years Ahead program involves a one-hour interactive presentation including a number of short video segments. Years Ahead was developed based on scientific road safety literature and extensive community consultation. Participants report that the program content is relevant to them and communicated in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Independent evaluation of the program has shown that people who attended a Years Ahead session had a greater road safety knowledge and awareness compared with those who had not attended a Years Ahead session.
