Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to explore the yielding behavior of Israeli drivers. A series of observations were carried out at a busy crosswalk at rush hour to determine the association between demographic factors, i.e. gender and age of both pedestrians and drivers and the rate of compliance with the yielding regulation. The observed rate of yielding did not exceed 53%. The results, approaching the level of statistic significance, revealed that drivers of both sexes tend to yield more to members of their own sex. Binary logistic analysis revealed that (1) this pattern is evident among female drivers of all age groups and male drivers who belong to the 26-50 age group (2) the drivers in the 26-50 age group, but not in other age groups, tended to exhibit a higher yielding rate towards the members of their own age group. Theoretical implications of these findings were discussed. (Author/publisher)
