This is a review of the research literature pertaining to drivers aged 15-24.it is organised into 14 sections:(a)the gross record; (b) exposure; (c) experience and youthfulness vs. Age; (d) sex; (e) violations; (f)alcohol;(g)drugs;(h)motorcycles;(i)crime;(j)types of accidents characteristic of young drivers;(k)cars and scholastic work;(l)personal characteristics;(m)background characteristics;and(n)driver education.the summary and suggestions section propose a diagnostic-remedial approach to the development of improved programmes of driver preparation,driver licensing and driver improvement.a probabilistic rationale is advocated,in contrast with the traditional correlational model.it is shown that the exclusive use of correlation as a method of analysis when one of the two variables is number of accidents can obscure precisely the information that is needed.(a) (this paper was presented at the university of north carolina symposium on the young driver : reckless or unprepared?
