Abstract

This paper focuses on the skills that the transportation planner or engineer needs in order to be a good communicator and listener. It discusses: 1. one-way and two-way communication, and appropriate uses for each style; 2. barriers to effective communication; 3. listening skills; 4. clarifying unclear messages; 5. recognizing non-verbal communication techniques; and, 6. effective methods for giving instructions.
