This publication described work from two major international research programmes on the road transport informatics (RTI) systems concerning mainly either driver information or automatic vehicle control. The research programmes are: (a) DRIVE (Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe); and (b) PROMETHEUS (Programme for European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety). The chapters address the following concerns: (a) adaptive interfacing of drivers with the control system; (b) driver warning systems; (c) assisted driving; (d) driver performance and stress monitoring; (e) route navigation; (f) automatic violation detection; and (g) systems for drivers with special needs. For abstracts of individual chapters see C 3000-3036.
