Abstract

This publication described work from two major international research programmes on the road transport informatics (RTI) systems concerning mainly either driver information or automatic vehicle control. The research programmes are: (a) DRIVE (Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe); and (b) PROMETHEUS (Programme for European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety). The chapters address the following concerns: (a) adaptive interfacing of drivers with the control system; (b) driver warning systems; (c) assisted driving; (d) driver performance and stress monitoring; (e) route navigation; (f) automatic violation detection; and (g) systems for drivers with special needs.
