How much are (light-)mopeds used in the Netherlands?

Answer

The distance travelled on mopeds and light mopeds is quite stable at about 1 billion km per year [i] Based on these figures, it is not possible to make a reliable distribution of the number of kilometres travelled on a moped or on a light moped, nor a reliable distribution of distances travelled by age or gender. It is however possible to distinguish between the possession of a moped, light moped and microcar. Table 2 shows that in recent years the number of light mopeds increased, whereas the number of mopeds decreased. Since 2012 there have been more light mopeds than mopeds in the Netherlands.

Table 3 shows that not only young people own a (light) moped. 46% of the light moped owners and 42% of the moped owners are even 50 years of age or older. It must be noted that owning a vehicle is not the same as using a vehicle. It may well be the case that due to cheaper insurance the parents of the main user register the moped or light moped on their name.
