Vacancy intern: Red light negation at intersections - algorithms for data synchronisation

Are you an ambitious student who is passionate about image recognition technology and road safety? Do you want to contribute to research that directly affects road user safety? Then this internship is for you!

  • Duration: 3 months (in consultation)
  • Start: 16 september (in consultation)

What does the research involve?

SWOV is currently researching conflicts at intersections between motorised vehicles and crossing cyclists. In order to investigate the role of red light running (red light negation), two data sources are used: 1) data files (V-logs) of traffic control systems, and 2) video images of the traffic flows used by the Canadian company Transoft, Inc. to calculate trajectories.

The challenges we face:

  • Data synchronisation: the V-logs and video images must be perfectly matched in terms of timing. This can be done using an image recognition algorithm at intersections where traffic lights are visible.
  • Pattern recognition in absence of traffic lights: at some intersections, no traffic lights are visible. We want to investigate whether reliable synchronisation is possible using patterns in trajectory data, training an algorithm with available image data.

What does the internship assignment involve?

During this internship you are (co-)responsible for the implementation and validation of algorithms needed to solve the above-mentioned synchronisation problems, and for reporting on them. It will be discussed whether it is feasible to also determine red light negation itself. You will continuously collaborate with one or more SWOV researchers.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a committed bachelor or master student in Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Econometrics or Computer Science & Engineering. In addition:

  • you have experience with programming image recognition algorithms (e.g. in Python);
  • you work conscientiously and are result-oriented;
  • you can work both independently and in a team; and
  • you have an affinity for road safety research.

Interested?

If so, you can email researcher Reinier Jansen or staff advisor Quirina van Duivenvoorde.

More information about SWOV and SWOV research can be found at swov.nl.

What are we offering?

An internship in a renowned interdisciplinary institute for road safety research. You will have ample opportunity to interact with SWOV researchers and learn more about our research. The atmosphere is open, collegial and positive-yet-critical. In short, a very suitable environment to gain work and research experience in a practically relevant and interesting field. At the start of your internship, a clear research plan will be agreed with you. During the internship you will work according to this plan, and your personal learning goals will also be closely monitored. During your internship, you will of course be supported by an experienced SWOV supervisor, and you will be part of a multidisciplinary team.

Reimbursement

Travel expenses may be reimbursed on the basis of 2nd class public transport with a maximum of € 200 per month. The internship allowance is € 424.50 gross a month based on 36 hours a week.
