In 2022, there were 745 traffic fatalities in the Netherlands, an increase of 163 compared to 2021, according to CBS statistics. Nearly 40% were cyclists and 30% were car occupants. The majority of victims were older road users, while children were relatively few.
SWOV Director Martin Damen states that road safety is now at the level of 15 years ago. According to a SWOV report, halving the number of traffic victims by 2030 is unattainable, but additional measures can save victims. Damen emphasizes the need for effective measures and political priority, particularly focused on bicycle safety and speed reduction.
