Final event MeBeSafe project: increased road safety through nudging

The EU-funded MeBeSafe project (Measures for Behaving Safely in Traffic) came to an end after 3.5 years of research. During the online final event on September 3 the results of this project were presented. The aim of the project was to use sensor-based feedback such as 'nudging' and 'coaching' to develop new measures to steer drivers and cyclists towards safer behavior.

SWOV was responsible, among other things, for implementing an infrastructural bicycle nudge in Eindhoven in collaboration with TNO. The flow of cyclists improved after the implementation of the nudge. The nudge implemented in the field study is transverse lines that are drawn closer to each other as they approach the intersection of two bicycle facilities.

The expected results include improved safety and traffic flow compared to the base scenario where no nudge exists. SWOV’s Dr. Matin Nabavi Niaki presented these results at the final event on Wednesday September 3.
