First MEDIATOR deliverables available

The MEDIATOR project published the first five public deliverables. MEDIATOR will develop a mediating system for drivers in semi-automated and highly automated vehicles, resulting in safe, real-time switching between the human driver and automated system based on who is fittest to drive.

Each of these WP1 deliverables concerns preparatory work for the functional requirements and the actual design of the Mediator system. The Mediator system is being developed to mediate between the driver and the vehicle automation by assessing who is most fit and capable to perform the driving task. As such, the Mediator system contributes to a safe transition from partial to full road vehicle automation.

Deliverables

Deliverable D1.1 gives a clear introduction to the MEDIATOR concepts and main use cases. It presents a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art knowledge on driver and automation fitness assessment and HMI design concepts, as well as the knowledge gaps that need to be bridged.

Deliverable D1.2 zooms in on the fitness of the driver. It focuses on real time assessment as well as prediction of fatigue, distraction and driver comfort. These are important determinants of fitness to drive, when the workload is reduced due to partial automation.

Deliverable D1.3 zooms in on ‘automation fitness’. During the transition period, automated driving will only be possible for some tasks and in some conditions. Hence, it must be determined if the automation can reliably perform in the current and near future situation.

Deliverable 1.5 zooms in on the Human Machine Interface (HMI);

  • how to ensure smooth, transparent transitions of control, avoiding mode confusion and information overload,
  • how to ensure the driver is ready to come into action if needed,
  • how to deal with conflicts if driver and automation ‘disagree’ about the best solution.

Finally, Deliverable 1.4, based on the previous deliverables, describes the functions and functional requirements of the Mediator system in detail and as such forms the basis for the design and implementation of the Mediator system. In addition, it describes the focus points and use cases addressed in the project.
