Samenvatting

This report proposes strategies and actions designed to reduce the carnage on the nation's roadways attributable to drunk driving. In January 1995, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) convened a meeting with its partners and established a challenging goal: to reduce alcohol related driving fatalities in America to 11,000 by the year 2005. In february 1995, the Department of Transportation DOT convened a summit to develop strategies for reaching this goal. The summit participants developed 125 recommendations for consideration. Subsequently, an Implementation Team reviewed the recommendations and crafted this Guide for Action. The Guide for Action is presented in seven sections : a) public education, b) individual responsibility, c) the health care community, d) business and employers, e) legislation, f) enforcement and adjudication, and g) technology. The focus is partnerships. Each section contains four parts: a) recommended strategies, b) a background statement, c) action steps for implementing the strategies and, d) the benefits to be realized by implementing the specific actions.
