This note gives estimates of the values for prevention of road casualties and road accidents for use in the appraisal of road schemes. The estimates are based on data for 1999. The values for the prevention of fatal accidents and casualties include the following cost elements: loss of output due to injury, ambulance costs and costs of hospital treatment and human costs. The valuation of an injury accident also includes costs of damage to vehicles and property and the costs of police and insurance administration. Guidelines are presented for the use of accident and casualty values for appraisal of road proposals. In 1999, 3,138 fatal accidents, 33,267 serious accidents and 198,643 slight accidents were reported. In cost benefit terms, the value of prevention of these injury accidents is estimated to have been ú11,743 million at 1999 prices and values.
