Samenvatting

The overall objective of RANKERS is to develop new comprehensive, scientific — based and practical guidelines or recommendations for road infrastructure safety to enable optimal cost — effective decisions by road authorities in their efforts to promote sustainable safer roads and eradicate dangerous road sections. This report presents a brief summary of the 1st RANKERS Workshop that was held on February 28th 2006 at Castilla y León regional administration representation offices in Brussels. On the context of the likely future European legislation on safe road design & management, scientific and innovative engineering best practices, like the ones developed in RANKERS, can contribute to its translation to everyday driving conditions. This workshop featured the preliminary results of the RANKERS project, focused mainly on the most recurrent accident scenarios involving the road infrastructure and the first version of the eBook. Moreover, the panel discussions held after project presentations provided a great value input for the next stages of the project at that time. The workshop was held under the framework of the ERF Infrastructure Safety Forum, an initiative launched as part of the European Road Federation activities towards better road safety. Its main objective is to highlight the life — saving potential of safer road engineering. In order to get the most level of audience, the following announcement was prepared and distributed among stakeholders.
