Samenvatting

The continuing integration of the EU Member States economies will stimulate transport, necessitating the development of a Common Transport Policy (CTP). The measures taken to improve road safety, vehicles and road infrastructure and to reduce accidents caused by the human factor (drink driving, seat belts, speed limits, rest periods for commercial drivers) are described. The EU priorities in the field of maritime safety are considered with reference to convergent implementation of international standards, port state control, infrastructure and standard setting. Areas of air safety where action at the community level is appropriate are examined: prevention of accidents, aircraft and their maintenance, personnel licensing and working time, air traffic management and air traffic control, and accidents and incidents. Measures to reduce the risks associated with the transport of dangerous goods are outlined.
