The national 55-mile-per-hour speed limit law was passed in 1973 in the U.S.A. Initially enacted as a temporary measure, it was later permanently established. This report addresses various aspects of the law since its enactment, including (1) a discussion on the claimed benefits; (2) a presentation of the problems inhibiting full compliance by the motoring public; and (3) an assessment of the adequacy of Federal efforts to administer the legislative requirements.
