This paper can be compared with the paper titled `7 socio-economic and demographic trends' (in the Netherlands; see IRRD 493643 (see C 11838), but it is based on the Amsterdam PEROVAM (In Dutch: PERiodiek Onderzoek Vervoer AMsterdam) traffic survey. The results show that the national findings do not apply for the situation in a city like Amsterdam. Important are the former migrations from the city, as a result of which ageing of the population in Amsterdam doesn't have the national effects. Amsterdam will keep its population structure, in which most people have a job and cause a large part of the commuter traffic in and around Amsterdam. Students who remain in Amsterdam after finishing their studies, will bring about a relatively quicker growth of education and income level. Emancipation, acclimatization and income growth offer possibilities for migrants to make up arrears. Next to this traffic, there will be a new stream of recreational traffic: the people who will be retired, but who are used to Amsterdam as a city in which cultural entertainment is amply available.
