Despite an increase of 51% in annual motor vehicle miles in the U.S. during the 1967- 1977 period, the country's highway-railroad grade crossings are getting safer. The latest accident statistics show that, despite a 31% increase in exposure at highway-railroad crossings, 1977 fatality figures are 44% below the 1967 numbers. Federal Highways Funds gave 760 million dollar for crossing safety projects.
