Samenvatting

This paper gives an overview of the proposed programme, of the AA Foundation for Road Safety Research, to reduce road deaths and serious injuries. The "aggressive" target is a reduction by 40 per cent for adults and 50 per cent for children within nine years. The programme focuses on three interacting components of the safety system: the car, the road and the behaviour of motorists and road users. The Foundation will contribute to European programmes on the vehicle. Road projects include working with other authorities to research road conditions and accidents. The road user behaviour programme includes child pedestrian training, tracking behaviour of elderly drivers, post-test training for novice drivers, and work on the problem of close following. Technology is playing an increasing role in casualty reduction. Other Foundation projects mentioned include one on speed limits, to increase driver awareness and rationalise limits according to the environment; and one to increase road engineering standards including technical audit of roads.
