The Engaged Driving Symposium provided an overview of the state-of-the-science on distracted driving. Topics covered included: Definition of distracted driving and taxonomy; Visual and cognitive driver distraction metrics; Cognitive distraction and situation awareness; Driver choice and engagement in distracting activities; Convergence theory and understanding risk and prevalence; Estimates of prevalence and risk based on naturalistic data; Special considerations in distracted driving with teens; State and Federal Laws targeting distracted driving; Driver cellphone and texting ban effectiveness.
