For the layout, construction and administration of urban traffic provisions in the netherlands, knowledge and experience are required which have so far only been available from widely dispersed sources. Technicians as well as road administrators need a collection of this knowledge. The purpose of this book is to give recommendations for traffic provisions in urban areas. Apart from the collection of knowledge, uniformity in the application and the execution of these provisions can lead to better traffic safety. The book has five main parts. Part i contains an introduction on the layout of the book and gives a definition of traffic terms. Part ii contains basic information with mathematical statistical documentation data on the human, the car, the road and traffic, legislation and starting points for traffic engineering. Part iii describes working methods and aids for analysis and design. Part iv presents the provisions for motor vehicles and bicycles from the point of view of traffic engineering. Part v details special subjects such as beaconing and carriageway marking. By means of numerous examples, possible solutions are presented.
