Using samples of novice and experienced drivers, a selfdescription scale for the proposed motivational dimension was item analyzed. Coefficents of difficulty, selectivity, homogeneity, consistency, and stability, and distributions of raw scores barely met usual standards. Validation by comparing extreme groups was successful only in part. For experienced drivers, behaviour was measured using an instrumented vehicle. Some variables (i.e.vehicle handling, overtaking behaviour, and driving distances)showed fairly high correlations to scores on A-A, especially when corrected for attenuation.
