Samenvatting

In Ouagadougou, Bourkina Fassa, populations of outer districts are severely handicapped by poor access to urban facilities located in central districts, the low motorized vehicle ownership, and the lack of water or electricity supply. From a survey conducted in two outer districts, it appears that handicaps are partially overcome by neighbourhood or family solidarity, but, unlike in some other cities (for instance, Bamako, Dakar), local initiatives are not focused on the improvement of public transportt inside these districts. Ouagadougou municipality will have to choose between more urban public facilities in outer districts (rather costly with low density) and a better access to central districts with public transport supply and a minimum road network serving the outer districts. (A) The English title of the paper is: "Accessibility to urban services and mobility needs of peripheral population : the case of Ouagadougou."
