The purpose of this study is to provide a method that will enable traffic and safety engineers to compare certain types of intersections relative to traffic safety. The method is based on determining an accident exposure index and could be utilized to identify the intersections that are prone to accidents. Four priority-type, unsignalized, at-grade intersections of varying geometrics were investigated. A fairly good correlation was found between the number of accidents and the accident exposure index. The index was calculated on the basis of the merging of the two traffic streams, and hence the single-vehicle accidents cannot be assumed to correlate with the index. (Author/publisher)
