Samenvatting

Novice drivers in the UK have an increased risk of being involved in a road traffic accident. Data on new drivers were collected in the Cohort Study of Learner and Novice Drivers I and the Cohort II study. Traffic offences were relatively rare in the first 6 months after passing the test, but more than 19% of respondents reported having been involved in an accident. The increased risk of an accident is due to inexperience and attitude. Speeding and poor comprehension of hazard perception are major causes of accidents. Changes in the driving test, pass rates and hours of professional driving tuition are discussed in relation to inexperience. The influence of attitude and education on young driver behaviour are considered.
