Part 1 of this report considers previous studies of the involvement of heavy goods vehicles in accidents. Reference is made to an experiment carried out by the Metropolitan Police into the use of fluorescent and retroreflectorised panels to increase vehicle conspicuity. Details of accidents involving heavy goods vehicles in the Metropolitan Police district during 1970 are analysed in part 2. In part 3 further details of a random sample of 330 accidents involving heavy goods vehicles are considered.
