Samenvatting

This paper examines the trends and characteristics of road users involved in accidents at railway level crossings for the period 1975-1988 in Victoria. Total casualty accidents have decreased, however this decrease is entirely in motorised vehicle/train accidents as boom barriers or flashing lights have been installed at crossings with the greatest exposure and accident history. Casualty accidents with trains involving pedestrians, bicycles and horses have increased slightly in this period. Differences in the types of level crossing accidents in Metropolitan Melbourne and the rest of the state are also examined (A).
