In spite of increasing use of grade separation on non-motorways both in rural and urban areas, single level junctions of varying complexity must inevitably be much more numerous for the foreseeable future. Even with adequate funds there would be little point in trying to grade separate the many thousands of lightly trafficked junctions where single-level treatment gives satisfactory safety and capacity.
