Samenvatting

This report presents the results of an examination of traffic accidents on single-carriageway A class rural roads in the English county of Cambridgeshire, using data from the period 1988-94. The six roads examined were selected on the basis of traffic volumes and the physical geography of their routes, all entirely within the county. Video cameras and site observations were used to collect environment information for each route, including details of road markings, hedges and trees, kerbing bends, driver aspect, and unobstructed forward visibility. Additional information was collected for accidents at junctions. Questionnaires were sent to drivers who had been involved in accidents on the routes during 1993 or 1994. This information was appended to STATS19 information collected by the local police, and statistical models examined interactions between these data sources. The implications of the intersection results are discussed, and various accident remedial measures are suggested. The report has the following chapters: (1) Introduction; (2) Methodology; (3) Traffic flow and accident characteristics; (4) Accident types, drivers and vehicles involved; (5) Links, junctions and accesses; (6) What the drivers say; (7) Accidents and the road environment; and (8) What are the main conclusions?
