Samenvatting

The aim of the report is to investigate whether the use of red-light cameras in Glasgow district has had a measurable and significant effect on the number, as well as the characteristics, of accidents at all signalised junctions and pelican crossings. The study also attempts to carry out a cost-benefit analysis of the camera technology and to compare estimated accident reduction benefits with the costs of buying and operating the system. A significant decline in accidents at all signalised junctions, between the before and after periods, of some 25% was noted. Red light cameras were one of several factors seen as contributing to the fall in accidents at signalised junctions. The cost-benefit analysis suggested that the economic returns from the implementation of red light camera technology have been positive.
