This paper presents two examples of the application of the State of Maryland's Smart Growth initiatives. The centerpiece of the Maryland Smart Growth program is the delineation of Priority Funding Areas (PFAs), which targets state funds for infrastructure and other programs to areas that local governments identify for growth. The two examples cited in this paper are (1) Montgomery County, a rapidly growing, urbanized area north of Washington, DC, and (2) Queen Anne's County, located approximately 40 miles east of Washington, DC, only recently identified as a potential area of growth. This paper describes how Montgomery County has practiced smart growth before the term became fashionable (More information concerning Montgomery County is contained in the article, "Summarizing Smart Growth with Transportation in Montgomery County, Maryland", by Richard C. It further describes how Queen Anne's County has taken the initiative to accommodate its future growth in the PFAs through identifying the need for transportation improvements.
