Transport security is high on the public and political agenda around the world, partly in response to threats posed by international terrorism. Thefocus of policy and related research has been on short-term security concerns. For policy to be robust in the longer term it is necessary to examine potential future challenges and opportunities relating to personal security and transport. This paper will discuss research undertaken by the Transportation Research Group (TRG) at the University of Southampton in this area through the ASSURED project (Achieving perSonal Security in futURE Domestic travel) for the UK Government's Department for Transport. ASSURED examined the inter-relationship between two critical themes in relation to personal security in travel - technological developments and user needs. These themes will be key determinants of how personal security in domestic travel will be supported in the future. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
