Samenvatting

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has the lowest rate of road fatalities in Australia per head of population, vehicles registered and distance travelled in the ACT. The ACT is a relatively small urbanised area serviced by a well-designed road system. Previous studies by ARRB Group for the NRMA ACT Road Safety Trust have found that as many fatal crashes involving ACT vehicles occur in New South Wales (NSW) as in the ACT. This study places ACT crash rates in the context of kilometres travelled by ACT vehicles in ACT versus in NSW, and versus NSW vehicles in NSW. Travel in NSW accounted for 19 per cent of all travel by ACT vehicles. On a per kilometre basis, ACT vehicles were more likely to be involved in a fatal crash in NSW compared with NSW vehicles in NSW but less likely to be involved in an injury crash. When ACT vehicle crash rates in NSW were compared with crashes in the ACT, both fatal and injury crash rates were higher. On this basis, ongoing education campaigns directed at ACT drivers promoting the need to take special care when travelling in NSW are warranted. Previous studies have also indicated areas where education can be targeted. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E217099.
