Models of how people spend their time have been under development for at least ten years, and they have been considered for applications in transport planning for at least eight. After that length of time, one would expect that the approach should be showing some practical returns for the effort expended on its development. This paper attempts to take stock of how far that expectation has been achieved, and discusses how far the approach has lived up to the claims made for its potential utility. In doing so, some alternative approaches to activity modelling are compared and the essential features of the approach are discussed.
