Samenvatting

There are two principal sources of data in Great Britain for studying the number of drink/drive accidents: the breath test reports in the Stats19 accident database and the postmortem reports of the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of dead drivers. Both sources are incomplete. This article describes how it is possible to estimate the actual number of drink/drive accidents from the available information, using statistical models to compensate for those cases where a driver's BAC is not known. The results demonstrate a major fall in the number of drink/drive accidents between 1985 and 1991, by over one third for fatal accidents and by one quarter for all injury accidents. (A)
