Samenvatting

Under appropriate circumstances, the addition of an interchange on a congested section of interstate freeway can be a solution. The point is illustrated using a congested section of Interstate 64/US 40 in St. Louis, Missouri. Alternative treatments of the on-ramp for the new interchange are analyzed by microsimulation. The analysis showed that connecting the new on-ramp to the existing off-ramp by an auxiliary lane created a weaving section with problems for exiting traffic. A simple on-ramp merge followed by the existing off-ramp diverge would provide better operating conditions. (A)
