The electronic ticketing system for urban transport in Gorizia is a trial system that forms part of an extensive program for upgrading local public transport services in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. The trial concerns automatic ticketing and related issues. Its purpose is to introduce and optimize a new system that can influence end user behavior to the extent that economic benefits will ensue both for the end user and for the operator. The introduction of this system is being accompanied by a public information campaign for which the key slogans are: "the more you travel, the less you spend" and "you only pay if you travel". The project complies with principles of equity, common sense and respect for the social aspects of the public transport service. The city of Gorizia has been chosen as the pilot site for the trial, because the number of services and vehicles is sufficient to allow complete verification, without the need for excessive investments. The results and solutions validated in the Gorizia trial will then be applied to regional transportation and, in the medium to long-term, the system will be extended to all the public transport operators in the Region. State-of-the-art contactless technology is being used for the trial. The ISO1443 type A Myfare card was chosen. However, the main application is the payment of public transport fares, with the objectives of improving the management and control of passenger flow, rationalizing associated financial transactions and improving the cost efficiency of the public transport service. Moreover, the system data permits the Region to monitor the effectiveness of investments in addressing strategic, political, social and economic issues. The Gorizia trial system allows business relationships between different operators, so that common fares policies can be applied; it permits the interoperable use of travel tickets and passes and the corresponding distribution of revenues. Once the system is operative in the entire Region, it will be characterized as a single integrated system composed of independent subsystems, each with its own functions and areas of responsibility that can interact with each other and with the Region. Not only the Region and operators stand to gain from a system of this type, but also the end users can benefit from a simpler, more transparent management of local transport facilities in the urban, rural and metropolitan domains. Moreover, the pilot trial permits the validation of a single card for multiple services. In the longer term the citizens of Friuli Venezia Giulia can look forward to using a single card for various types of mobility service and other types of public service, such as health and tax payments.
