This paper presents the ADVANCE project, which aims to provide information for a road network for a heavily congested area in the north west suburbs of Chicago, IL, USA. ADVANCE is one of the largest Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) in the world. It is an operational test, involving vehicles that will contain in-vehicle computers and radio communications equipment. The vehicles will be given route guidance in a real-time framework, using information from existing sources such as closed loop traffic control systems. They will be the primary information source, by acting as traffic probes. Up to 5000 drivers from the public and private sectors will be selected, who will probably use the equipment for at probably use the equipment for at least 18 months. The four major partners in the project are: (1) the US Federal Highway Administration; (2) the Illinois Department of Transportation; (3) Motorola, Inc.; and (4) the Illinois University Transportation Research Consortium. The paper considers the following aspects of the ADVANCE project environment: (1) location; (2) vehicles and vehicle positioning; (3) drivers; (4) traffic information centre; (5) flexibility; (6) system integration; (7) project management plan; (8) schedule; and (9) status.
