With the commencement of information provision service by the Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) on December 1996 in the Osaka area, the Osaka Prefectural Police HQ began operating its Advanced Mobile Information System (AMIS). The AMIS is one of the six subsystems in the concept of Universal Traffic Management Systems (UTMS), the construction of which is being promoted by the National Police Agency, Japan. The AMIS is a system that can serve as a basis for Dynamic Route Guidance systems and other systems. This paper describes the relation of the AMIS with the VICS, both operating in Osaka, the system configuration, functions, and utilization state of the AMIS, and future plans for this system.
