This paper describes research into the application of micro-electronic technologies to help the elderly and disabled (E&D) drivers. For example, such technologies can be applied to assist drivers in avoiding the two most common types of errors: disregard of traffic signals and signs, and right-of-way violation. In general, these technologies can: improve mobility, increase personal safety and security, make travelling more enjoyable, increase road safety for all travellers. This paper outlines functions that would help in meeting the above objectives. Fourteen specific application incorporating one or more of these functions are mentioned. As an example, the features of one of these applications, these applications, an accessible-entrance locator, are outlined. The paper also outlines a concept for a more comprehensive Advanced Mobile Support System (AMSS) - consisting of in-vehicle information, management, control, and communication modules - designed to assist E&D travellers. In addition, R&D activities that would accelerate the implementation of this and similar systems are recommended. (A)
