Samenvatting

The paper provides a brief description of the DRIVE project V2043 ARTIS (Advanced Road Telematics in Spain) in relation to the objectives of the sponsoring partners - the Direccion General de Trafico (the state administration) and the European Commission. For the DGT, the objectives relate to the definition of the infrastructure required to support responsive traffic management across a corridor stretching from the French border down the Mediterranean coast to Barcelona via Madrid to Sevilla. ARTIS consists of five work areas which comprise separate, but integrated, pilot projects. The focus of the paper is upon the work area concerned with the design, conduct and evaluation of data interchange field trials within the ARTIS corridor. Considerable work has been carried out on the development of standardised electronic message interchange within the framework of EDIFACT, and this work needs to be extended to cover traffic data exchange applications. The interest of the European Commission centres upon the proving and promotion of pan-European standards for information exchanges between traffic control centres. (A)
