This paper examines the future applications of sensors in restraint systems. As airbag systems have become more complex, an increasing number of sensors able to discriminate between varying crash severities are needed. Protection is needed for other road users as well as vehicle occupants. For an improved passive safety system, pre-crash impact information is required from a sensor at the front of a vehicle. This closing velocity sensor measures the distance of an object in front of the vehicle and the information enables appropriate activation of restraint devices. Sensors need to be integrated as they become more complex. For the covering abstract see ITRD E126782.
