Samenvatting

This paper outlines PROMETHEUS and DRIVE-2, the two main European research and development programmes for Advanced Telematics for Transport (ATT). Both programmes are due to finish around the end of 1994. The following ATT application areas of the programmes are discussed: (1) automatic debiting; (2) demand management; (3) travel and traffic information systems, including route guidance; (4) urban traffic management; (5) interurban traffic management; (6) safety of people; (7) system safety; (8) freight fleet management; (9) hazardous goods management; (10) public transport; (11) traveller's personal information service; (12) autonomous intelligent cruise control; and (13) dealing with adverse weather conditions. In DRIVE-2, most of the effort goes into introducing ATT research results to urban or county local authorities, which explains why many pilot or test sites for ATT can be found in almost all European countries. DRIVE-2 has created a truly PanEuropean cooperation between cities and between countries. The paper finally briefly compares ATT work in Europe and Japan.
