A joint effort to develop advanced transportation controller (ATC) standards for roadside computer equipment is finally near completion after more than five years in development. This paper summarizes the work involved in developing these standards. The development process included laboratory testing and proof-of-concept deployment milestones to ensure delivery of standards that are workable and acceptable by the ATC user community, including both manufacturers and public agencies. The open system provides software developers with a modern platform for transportation applications and provides agencies with common equipment for multiple applications. The ATC user community also is identifying standards that will be necessary for the next generation of intelligent transportation system field infrastructure.
